Where I've been. What I've been doing.

If anyone would notice, aside from an old article I posted an update to and a blog I just wrote this evening, I haven't made an entry to this since September of 2011. In that last post, I made mention of "big things" coming down the pipeline for me. Well, they came alright.

The Logitech G3960 Wireless Headset and Linux Mint 11

I got these sweet wireless headsets (the difference in wording being because they also have a mircophone) with the idea that never again would I run my chair over the wire, or snag it on my feet, or have the in-line volume control be the reason a pair of headphones become useless. Being wireless, I have essentially addressed both of those issues but I had researched wireless headsets in the past and they were not quite there yet. These, however, are awesome!

Setting up a Steam game server using Ubuntu Server 10.10

This process hasn't changed much since the earliest posts I found going back as far as 2006, but I couldn't help but notice that there weren't very many people complaining about the issue I was having getting their binary to install. The issue was an odd one where executing the updater binary caused the error -bash: ./hldsupdatetool.bin: no command found. It turns out that the binary decompressor requires the 32-bit version of the system tools (ia32-libs) and, upon further inspections, the program uncompress is needed (provided by ncompress).

Whoo Hoo!!

I have some big things in the pipeline. In both the line of my personal life and this site. As far as the site is concerned, I have a couple larger articles to write about my new uber-nerd-tastic computer setup that I am just so happy that I have been fairly successful in this venture. More features to the site will be short coming but I've considered starting a forum for family and friends to ask me computer questions, whether it be for personal interest or for some personal computer repair.

Caldera's Desktop

Graphic:

This is a screen shot of the newest addition to my family of machines. This is Caldera, an µATX-based PC I built to be a standalone linux machine. Aside from this having been something I've wanted to do for some time, I am anticipating an actual need for a PC dedicated to one task only... programming. Over the last 2 years of school I've become increasingly annoyed with dual-booting. In the past the functionality has been more than adequate for my gaming needs, but as more and more games become co-op or multiplayer based, the more I'm finding myself rebooting my system to join in.

Starting from scratch... essentially

As it may appear, the site looks a tad bit different. This came about as of last night since I became aware of the fact that the old site was no longer accessible for some reason (mysql permission errors for reasons that I do not fully understand), either way, it prompted me to attempt to upgrade the site to Drupal 7 and ended up just having to start over from scratch. I will be able to reconstruct some of the article I had but, honestly, if I can't get them out of the old database then I'll have to depend on Google Cache images.

Essential LaTeX: Just What's Needed

This is mainly for any of the people I have class with, but maybe it will help others too.

Life With the Droid

Home++ environment.

I recently upgraded my phone from LG's enV2 to Motorola's Droid. Wow, what an upgrade. Now, my reasons for wanting a Droid since they've been released is because I've always wanted to have an iPhone but never wanted to have to deal with switching carriers. Not to mention, I'm a computer programmer and the Droid's operating system is open-source which means I can make my own programs for it... eventually. The fact that it's open-source ALSO means that other programmers out there can give away their programs for free, legally.

IMO: TV series are better than movies

I'll be the first to admit that I love television shows. Not much can improve my day more than stepping out of my life and into the episodic life of such professionals as Dr. Gregory House and his team, Dr. Temperance Brennan and her team, Chuck Bartowski and his handlers, or Sheriff Jack Carter and the town of Eureka. That's just to name a few of the shows I watch... largely, the fictional ones. Some of my shows have come to their respective ends and so I do not get to travel to their universes any more, except for when I'm feeling nostalgic.
