The Logitech G3960 Wireless Headset and Linux Mint 11

I got these sweet wireless headsets (the difference in wording being because they also have a mircophone) with the idea that never again would I run my chair over the wire, or snag it on my feet, or have the in-line volume control be the reason a pair of headphones become useless. Being wireless, I have essentially addressed both of those issues but I had researched wireless headsets in the past and they were not quite there yet. These, however, are awesome!

Initially, these were really only desired for use with my gaming rig. I naturally assumed that USB audio (not to mention the wireless functionality) was a royal pain to get working in Linux and would ultimately lead to me being more frustrated than happy with the results. In the case where I didn't want to be wearing my headphones (something like playing Assassin's Creed, or a similar game designed more for playing on a television) I piped the audio output from my gaming rig into the audio (line) input of my Linux rig. Very slick. Very handy.

Anyways, the real point of this post is to call attention to what I found on the webs that helped me do what I'm doing right now: grooving to some bassy tunes through my wireless headphones while typing this up in Linux Mint.

  1. After reading this thread for Ubuntu, I was quite hopeful that it would work. To my pleasant surprise, Pulseaudio seemed to auto-detect the plugging in of the headset's USB receiver just fine, I had only to set the output source to the headset. So that was nice.
    • Run the program: $gnome-volume-control and go to the Output tab, select the Logitech Headset option.
  2. In the thread linked above, the user faceclot mentions that they found the levels to be a little... lacking in the bass department. He links to another thread that, in the first post, directs the reader to this thread which informs people how to install an equalizer that they found to resolve that complaint.
